# Future > Future is a website and marketing platform for small businesses, side projects and ideas. A visitor describes what they're building, and Future makes three custom homepage designs from their answers. They choose a design and edit its words, photos and styles. A template made to fit them is also an option. Every plan includes a website, hosting, forms, contacts, newsletter sign-ups and visitor insights. Booking, the Shop with a 0% platform fee, deposits and no-show fees, review requests and automatic emails (rebooking nudges, win-back and welcome) start with Pro. Future doesn't send newsletters: owners collect sign-ups in Contacts and send from their own email tool. Coming soon: texts, gift cards, free domain registration and the AI visibility report. When someone opens the old address, their browser and Google are sent straight to the new page instead. Businesses use 301 redirects when they move to a new website, change a page's address or switch domain names, so old links keep working. - [Above the fold](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/above-the-fold/): Above the fold means the part of a web page people see before they scroll. The phrase comes from newspapers, where the biggest stories sat on the top half of the folded front page. On a website, it's your first screen: on a phone, roughly your header, headline and one or two buttons. - [AI Overviews](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/ai-overviews/): Google AI Overviews are short, AI-written answers that appear at the top of some Google search results. They sum up an answer from several web pages and show links to the sources they used. For a local business, being one of those sources can put your name in front of searchers above the regular results. - [Alt text](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/alt-text/): Alt text is a short written description of an image on a web page. Screen readers read it aloud to people who can't see the picture, browsers show it when an image fails to load, and search engines use it to understand what the image shows. It sits in the page's code, not on the screen. - [Business email](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/business-email/): A business email address is one that ends in your own domain name, like hello@yourbusiness.com, instead of a free webmail address. It shows customers the email really comes from your business. You get one by owning a domain and pairing it with an email service, which can be separate from your website. - [Call to action](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/call-to-action/): A call to action is a short instruction on a web page that tells visitors what to do next. It's usually a button or link with a few clear words, like "Call now", "Book online" or "Get a free quote". Often shortened to CTA, it turns someone reading about your business into someone contacting you. - [Call tracking](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/call-tracking/): Call tracking is a way to see which of your marketing makes the phone ring. You give each ad, listing or campaign its own phone number, and every number forwards to your real line. A call tracking service counts and often records the calls, so you can see where each one came from. - [Click-to-call](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/click-to-call/): Click-to-call is a phone number or button on a website that starts a call when someone taps it on a phone. Instead of reading your number and typing it in, a customer taps once and their phone dials you. On a computer, the same link can open a calling app. - [CMS (content management system)](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/cms/): A CMS, or content management system, is software that lets you add and change the words, photos and pages on your website without writing code. You log in, edit a page much like a document, and publish. Some you install and look after yourself; others come built into a website builder. - [Contact form](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/contact-form/): A contact form is a short form on a website where visitors type their name, contact details and a message, then send it to the business with one button. It saves them opening their email, and it gives you the same details every time. Quote forms and estimate request forms are contact forms built for one job. - [Conversion rate](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/conversion-rate/): A conversion rate is the share of website visitors who do the thing you want, such as call, book or send a form. You work it out by dividing conversions by visitors: if 400 people visit in a month and 12 get in touch, your conversion rate is 3%. It measures how well your site turns visitors into leads. - [Core Web Vitals](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/core-web-vitals/): Core Web Vitals are three measures Google uses to judge how a web page feels to real visitors: how fast the main content loads (LCP), how quickly the page responds to a tap or click (INP), and how much the layout jumps around while loading (CLS). Google reports them from real Chrome users' visits. - [CRM](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/crm/): A CRM, short for customer relationship management, is software that keeps every lead and customer in one place: their contact details, what they asked for, every conversation and the next step. Instead of names scattered across sticky notes, texts and inboxes, you see who needs a reply, a quote or a follow-up today. - [Custom domain](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/custom-domain/): A custom domain is a web address you own, like yourbusiness.com, used for your website instead of the free address a website builder gives you, which usually ends in the builder's own name. You buy it from a domain registrar, renew it each year, and connect it to your website by changing a few settings. - [DNS](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/dns/): DNS, short for Domain Name System, is the internet's address book. It turns a domain name people can remember, like yourbusiness.com, into the numeric address of the computer that holds your website, and tells email where to go. The instructions are stored as DNS records at the company that manages your domain. - [Domain name](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/domain-name/): A domain name is your website's address on the internet, like yourbusiness.com. It's what people type into a browser, what follows the @ in a business email address, and what goes on your signs and cards. You rent it from a domain registrar a year or more at a time, and it stays yours while you renew. - [Email marketing](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/email-marketing/): Email marketing is sending emails to people who have agreed to hear from your business, such as customers and newsletter subscribers. It covers newsletters, offers, seasonal reminders and automatic messages like a welcome email or a follow-up after a visit. For a small business, it's one of the most direct ways to bring past customers back. - [Generative engine optimization](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/generative-engine-optimization/): Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and mention when they answer questions. It covers AI assistants and AI search answers such as Google's AI Overviews. Much of it overlaps with good SEO: clear pages, accurate business details and plain answers to real questions. - [Google Analytics](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/google-analytics/): Google Analytics is Google's free tool for measuring the people who visit your website: how many come, where they come from, which pages they view and what they do, like sending a form. The current version is called GA4. It works by adding a small piece of tracking code to every page of your site. - [Google Business Profile](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/google-business-profile/): A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on Google Search and Google Maps. It holds your name, address or service area, phone number, hours, photos and reviews. When someone searches for a business like yours nearby, this profile is often the first thing they see, before any website. - [Google Local Services Ads](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/local-services-ads/): Google Local Services Ads are ads that put local service businesses at the very top of Google search results, usually with a Google Verified badge, a star rating and a call or message button. You pay for each lead, such as a phone call or a message, rather than for each click. - [Google Search Console](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/google-search-console/): Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website appears in Google Search. It lists the searches that showed your pages, how often people clicked, which pages Google has indexed, and problems that could keep a page out of results. You prove you own the site, then Google shares the data. - [Intake form](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/intake-form/): A client intake form is a set of questions a new client or patient answers before a first meeting: who they are, how to reach them and what they need help with. Law firms, dental practices and other appointment-based businesses use them to prepare, spot poor fits early and save time in the first conversation. - [Landing page](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/landing-page/): A landing page is a web page built around one goal, such as getting a call, a quote request or a booking. It's usually the page people arrive at from an ad, an email or a search result. Unlike a homepage, which introduces everything you do, a landing page focuses on one offer and leaves out distractions. - [Lead generation](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/lead-generation/): Lead generation is the work of attracting people who might need what you sell and getting their contact details, so you can follow up. A lead is a potential customer who has raised a hand: called, filled out a form, booked a consultation or asked for a quote. For a local business, your website is usually where leads arrive. - [Local SEO](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/local-seo/): Local SEO is the work of helping your business show up when people nearby search for what you do, like "roofer near me" or "pest control in Phoenix". It covers your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your website's service and town pages, and keeping your business details consistent across the web. - [Map pack](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/map-pack/): The map pack is the box of local results Google shows near the top of the page for searches like "plumber near me" or "pizza": a map with pins and, usually, three businesses listed under it. Each listing comes from a Google Business Profile, with its rating, hours and buttons to call or get directions. - [Meta description](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/meta-description/): A meta description is a short summary of a web page, written into the page's code, that search engines may show under the page's title in search results. Visitors don't see it on the page itself. A good one tells a searcher, in a sentence or two, what the page offers and why to click. - [NAP (name, address, phone)](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/nap/): NAP stands for name, address and phone number: the three details that identify a local business online. In local SEO, NAP consistency means writing them exactly the same way on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory or social profile, so search engines and customers can tell they all describe one business. - [No-show fee](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/no-show-fee/): A no-show fee is a charge a business makes when a client misses a booked appointment without canceling in time. The amount and the notice period are set in a policy the client agrees to when they book, usually with a card saved on file or a deposit taken up front. - [Online booking](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/online-booking/): Online booking lets customers choose a service, a date and a time on your website and confirm the appointment themselves, without calling. The system shows only the times you're free, sends a confirmation, and can take a deposit. It's also called online scheduling, and it works day or night. - [Online ordering](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/online-ordering/): Online ordering lets customers choose dishes from your menu on a website or app, pay, and pick a time for pickup or delivery, without phoning in. A restaurant can take orders on its own website, through an ordering system it controls, or through delivery apps that list many restaurants and take a cut of each order. - [Page speed](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/page-speed/): Page speed is how quickly a web page loads and becomes usable: how soon the main content appears, how fast the page responds to a tap, and whether things jump around while it loads. It's usually measured on a phone over a mobile connection, because that's where slow pages hurt most. - [Responsive design](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/responsive-design/): Responsive design is a way of building a website so the same pages rearrange themselves to fit any screen. On a computer you might see three columns side by side; on a phone they stack into one, the text stays readable without zooming, and buttons grow big enough to tap with a thumb. - [Review request](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/review-request/): A review request is a short message, by email, text or in person, asking a customer to leave a review of your business, usually on Google. The best ones are sent soon after the job, thank the customer by name, and include a direct link that opens the review form in one tap. - [Schema markup](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/schema-markup/): Schema markup is code added to a web page that labels its facts in a standard vocabulary search engines understand, from schema.org. It tells them, for example, that a string of numbers is your phone number, that a list is your opening hours, or that a page is a restaurant's menu. Visitors never see it. - [SEO](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/seo/): SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of making your website easier for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it shows up when people search for what you offer. For a small business it covers your site's setup, the words on each page, and your reputation across the web. - [Service area business](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/service-area-business/): A service area business is one that goes to its customers, at their homes or job sites, instead of serving them at its own storefront or office. Plumbers, cleaners and mobile mechanics are typical. On Google, it can hide its street address and show the towns or area it covers instead. - [Service area page](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/service-area-page/): A service area page is a page on your website about the work you do in one town, city or neighborhood. Businesses that travel to their customers, like plumbers, roofers and cleaners, use them to show up when people search for a service plus a place, such as "drain cleaning in Mesa". - [SSL certificate](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/ssl-certificate/): An SSL certificate is a small data file that lets a website use https, the secure version of a web address. It encrypts what passes between your site and a visitor, such as form details or card numbers, and proves to the browser that the site really belongs to your domain. - [Testimonials](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/testimonials/): A testimonial is a statement from a real customer about their experience with your business, which you publish on your website or in your marketing with their permission. Unlike a review on Google, you choose which testimonials to show and where, so they work best when they're specific, attributed and easy to believe. - [Trust signals](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/trust-signals/): Trust signals are the details on a website that show a visitor your business is real, qualified and reliable before they contact you. They include license and insurance details, reviews and testimonials, guarantees, years in business, memberships, real photos of your team and work, and clear contact details. - [UTM parameters](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/utm-parameters/): UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link, such as utm_source=flyer, that tell your analytics tool where each visitor came from. They let you see which emails, ads, social posts, flyers and QR codes actually bring people to your website, instead of lumping them all together. - [Web designer](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/web-designer/): A web designer is a professional who plans how a website looks and works: the layout of each page, the colors and type, the photos, and the path a visitor takes to call, book or buy. Many also build the site, write or edit the words, and set it up to be found on Google. - [Web hosting](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/web-hosting/): Web hosting is the service that stores your website's files on computers called servers, which stay connected to the internet day and night and send your pages to anyone who visits. Your domain name is the address people type; hosting is the place the site actually lives. Every website needs both. - [Website accessibility](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/website-accessibility/): Website accessibility means building a website so people with disabilities can use it: people who are blind and use screen readers, who can't use a mouse, who have low vision or color blindness, or who are deaf and need captions. The most widely used yardstick is WCAG, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. - [Website as a service](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/website-as-a-service/): Website as a service, or WaaS, is a way of getting a website for a monthly or yearly subscription instead of a large upfront fee. The plan usually covers the design, hosting, security, updates and support, and often marketing tools, so the site keeps being looked after for as long as you subscribe. - [Website builder](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/website-builder/): A website builder is an online tool that lets you create, edit and publish a website without writing code. You start from a template or, increasingly, a design made from a description of your business, then change the words and photos in your browser. Hosting is usually included in a monthly or yearly plan. - [Website maintenance](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/website-maintenance/): Website maintenance is the ongoing work of keeping a website secure, working and up to date after it launches. It covers technical jobs like software updates, security fixes, backups and renewing the domain and security certificate, plus content jobs like changing hours, prices, photos and staff, and checking that forms still arrive. - [Website template](https://builtonfuture.com/glossary/website-template/): A website template is a ready-made website design, with pages, layout, fonts and colors already set, that you fill in with your own words and photos. Website builders offer templates by trade or style, and the same template is often used by many other businesses, sometimes in your own town. ## Plans (US dollars, owner-approved) - Starter: $19/month billed yearly ($228 a year).
