What is Google Analytics?
Definition
Google Analytics is Google's free tool for measuring the people who visit your website: how many come, where they come from, which pages they view and what they do, like sending a form. The current version is called GA4. It works by adding a small piece of tracking code to every page of your site.
What Google Analytics tells a small business
Without numbers, it's hard to know whether your website is working or which marketing is worth paying for. Analytics answers practical questions: how many people found you through Google search versus social media or an ad, which service pages get read, whether phone visitors leave faster than computer visitors, and how many went on to send a form.
It can also bury you. GA4 has dozens of reports built for marketers, and a small business owner needs perhaps five numbers. It also relies on tracking code and cookies, shares visitor data with Google, and is one reason some sites show cookie banners. That's why some businesses choose simpler analytics that don't track people across the web.
For restaurants, the useful question is how many people view the menu and then tap for directions or to order. For plumbers, it's which service and town pages bring the visitors who tap to call. For law firms, it's which practice area pages lead to consultation requests, which shows where your next hour of writing should go.
The five numbers worth checking each month
- Visitors: is the total going up or down, month to month?
- Sources: how many came from search, social media, ads and other sites?
- Top pages: which pages get read, and which get skipped?
- Devices: how many visit on a phone, and does your site work well there?
- Conversions: how many calls, forms and bookings came from the site?
How Future handles it
Every Future plan counts visits and popular pages with no outside tracking code. Turn on visit paths and you'll read, in plain words, how a contact moved through the site before getting in touch. Future sites carry no third-party trackers unless you add one. If you want Google Analytics too, paste your measurement ID into Future's tracking settings on any plan; it loads only after a visitor agrees to cookies.
Premier adds a channels report, so you know whether search, social media or referrals are bringing in bookings and inquiries. A simple monthly report, with your site's activity in one update, is Coming soon on Pro.
