What is SEO?
Definition
SEO, short for search engine optimization, is the work of making your website easier for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it shows up when people search for what you offer. For a small business it covers your site's setup, the words on each page, and your reputation across the web.
What SEO means for a small business
SEO has three parts. The technical part makes sure search engines can reach and read your pages quickly, on phones. The content part is the words: a page for each service, written the way customers search. The reputation part is what others say about you: reviews, links from local sites, and listings that agree. Businesses serving one area add a layer on top: local SEO.
Search now includes AI answers, and your own website feeds them: across 200,085 local searches, businesses' own websites made up 42% of the sources AI answers cited. That's from a BrightLocal study published in September 2026. The same clear, specific pages that help you in Google help an AI assistant describe you correctly.
SEO looks different by trade. For plumbers, it's a page for each service and town, so "water heater repair" plus your suburb finds you. For law firms, it's a page for each practice area, because nobody searches "law firm" when they need a divorce lawyer. For dental practices, it's a page per treatment, from implants to children's visits, and clear new-patient details.
Be wary of anyone who promises a top ranking. Google itself warns that no one can guarantee a number-one spot. Good SEO is steady, unglamorous work, and it usually takes months to show. Be just as wary of shortcuts, like stuffing a page with town names or buying links: they can push a site down instead of up.
SEO basics you can do yourself
- Make one page per service, named the way customers search for it.
- Write a clear title and meta description for every page.
- Show your business name, address and phone the same way everywhere.
- Make sure your site loads fast and reads well on a phone.
- Set up your Google Business Profile and keep it current.
- Invite each satisfied customer to review you on Google.
- Add Google Search Console to see what people search to find you.
How Future handles it
Whatever the plan, every page leaves Future with a title and description that say what it's about, your business details repeated, and an about section written up from what you told us. Before anything goes live, a readability check and a checklist for AI assistants look over your pages.
No one, Future included, can promise where Google ranks you. On Premier, weekly rank tracking, local map rankings and an AI visibility report are Coming soon, so you can see where you stand.
