What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Definition

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and mention when they answer questions. It covers AI assistants and AI search answers such as Google's AI Overviews. Much of it overlaps with good SEO: clear pages, accurate business details and plain answers to real questions.

Why generative engine optimization matters to a small business

Some people now ask an AI assistant for a recommendation instead of scrolling a list of links: "a family dentist near me who takes my insurance". The answer names a few businesses and skips the rest. These tools build their answers from what they can find and read, and your own site is one of the main places they look. Across 200,085 local searches, businesses' own websites made up 42% of the sources AI answers cited. (BrightLocal, September 2026.)

What helps is mostly unglamorous. Say plainly who you are, what you do and where, on your homepage and your about page. Give each service its own page that answers what customers really ask. Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere, and keep your Google profile and reviews current, because AI tools read those too. Structured data helps machines read the facts.

For law firms, AI answers lean on pages that explain a practice area and its process in plain words, so a clear page for each area of law helps more than a slogan. For dental practices, list the treatments, the insurance you accept and whether you see children: the details people ask an assistant to filter by. For restaurants, put the menu, hours and price range on the page as text, not only in a photo.

Be wary of anyone promising to get you "ranked in AI". The tools change often, the answers vary from one person to the next, and no one outside those companies controls them. Treat GEO as making your business easy to understand, not as a trick.

How to make your business easier for AI to recommend

  1. Write a plain about section: who you are, what you do, where and since when.
  2. List your services and the towns you serve in words on your site, not only in images.
  3. Keep your business details identical on your site, your Google profile and directories.
  4. Keep reviews coming in; recent ones show you're open and active.
  5. Ask an AI assistant about your business now and then, and correct what it gets wrong at the source.

How Future handles it

Getting found on Google and in AI answers is part of every Future plan. Future drafts your about section in plain words, covering your trade, your area and your services, which is what search engines and AI assistants read. A search readiness score out of 100, with one-click fixes, shows what's left to do.

Two Premier tools for this are Coming soon: an AI visibility report and an AI visibility check, which show how AI answers describe your business. Future doesn't promise that any AI tool will mention you, because nobody can.
