What is NAP in SEO?
Definition
NAP stands for name, address and phone number: the three details that identify a local business online. In local SEO, NAP consistency means writing them exactly the same way on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory or social profile, so search engines and customers can tell they all describe one business.
Why NAP consistency matters
Search engines piece your business together from many places: your website, your Google profile, map apps, review sites and directories. When those places disagree, with an old number here and a former address there, it's harder to be sure they're the same business. Customers pay for it too, calling a dead line or driving to where you used to be.
Tiny formatting differences, like "Suite 4" and "Ste 4", matter far less than real ones. A number you dropped two years ago, a name you've since changed, or a closed location still listed as open: those are the ones to fix first.
For restaurants, a move or a new phone line is the classic trap: delivery apps, review sites and old menus can keep the old details for years. For auto repair shops, an address people can trust matters because customers have to drive a car that isn't running right to your door, and a wrong map pin can cost you the job.
Two special cases. If you travel to customers and work from home, you can hide your address on Google as a service area business; keep the name and phone the same everywhere. And if you use tracking numbers for ads, show your real number on the site and on listings, so your NAP stays steady.
How to clean up your NAP
- Write down your official name, address and main number exactly as you want them shown.
- Search your business name and your phone number to find every listing that comes up.
- Update your Google Business Profile and your website first; they matter most.
- Fix the map apps, review sites and directories your customers really use next.
- Close or merge duplicate listings and old locations.
- Check again whenever you move, rename the business or change numbers.
How Future handles it
On Future, your header and footer are shared by every page, and changing your phone number in your business profile updates it everywhere Future placed it. When a detail changes, fix it in your business profile first, then update your Google profile the same day.
Future doesn't update outside directories or your Google profile for you. Those stay in your hands, and the cleanup list above is the place to start. An hour spent on it once, and a quick check after any move, keeps it right.
