What is local SEO?
Definition
Local SEO is the work of helping your business show up when people nearby search for what you do, like "roofer near me" or "pest control in Phoenix". It covers your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your website's service and town pages, and keeping your business details consistent across the web.
Why local SEO matters to a small business
When someone searches for a local service, Google usually shows a map with a few businesses above the regular results: the map pack. Google says it ranks local results mainly on three things: relevance (do you do what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the place they named) and popularity, which it also calls prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are).
Your website feeds all three. Service pages tell Google what you do, town pages and your address tell it where, and a solid site that other local sites link to adds to how prominent you look. Your Google Business Profile and reviews do much of the work in the map, which is why local SEO starts there, but a thin website holds even a good profile back.
For roofers and contractors, local SEO is about the towns you work in: a page for each main service and your busiest towns, with real project photos from each. For pest control companies, it's the pests people search by name, like termites or bed bugs, and the season each one peaks. For landscaping companies, recent reviews that mention the town and the job do quiet, steady work.
Local SEO you can do this week
- Claim your Google Business Profile and fill in every section.
- Spell your business name, address and phone identically on every listing (NAP).
- Build one website page per main service.
- Name the towns you serve, and write a service area page for the busiest.
- After every job, ask for a review, and reply to each one you get.
- Add real photos of your work to your profile and your site.
- List your business on Apple Maps and Bing Places as well as Google.
