What are Google AI Overviews?
Definition
Google AI Overviews are short, AI-written answers that appear at the top of some Google search results. They sum up an answer from several web pages and show links to the sources they used. For a local business, being one of those sources can put your name in front of searchers above the regular results.
What Google AI Overviews mean for a small business
People type whole questions into Google: "do I need a lawyer after a minor car accident", "does a root canal hurt", "why is my AC blowing warm air". For many of them, Google now writes an answer before the list of links. Some searchers get what they need and never click, so the pages named as sources are the ones that still get seen.
Google picks those sources itself. Pages that answer the question directly, in plain words, near the top, and that come from a business that's clearly real (a name, an address, a phone number, reviews) give it something solid to cite. A page that hides the answer under a slogan or a wall of sales copy gives it very little.
For law firms, the questions are about process and cost: how long a claim takes, what a first consultation involves. A practice area page that answers them is the kind Google can quote. For dental practices, it's treatments and what insurance usually covers. For HVAC companies, it's symptoms and repair-or-replace questions, the ones homeowners type at night in a heat wave.
You can't buy a place in an AI Overview, and no one can promise you one. Google decides when to show them and which pages to cite, and the results shift often. What you control is having clear, accurate pages that answer real questions, which also serves everyone who scrolls past the summary.
How to give AI Overviews something to cite
- Write down the ten questions customers ask you most, word for word.
- Answer each on the page it belongs to, with the short answer first and the detail after.
- Use headings that read like the question, so the answer is easy to find.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with current hours and recent photos.
- Check Google Search Console to see which questions already bring people to your site.
- Search your own customers' questions now and then, and notice which sites Google cites.
How Future handles it
Every plan comes with search help for Google and AI answers. Pages carry a title, a summary and your business details, and Future drafts an about section from your answers, naming your trade, your town and your services: the kind of plain, factual writing Google can understand and quote.
Future can't place you in an AI Overview, and nobody honest can promise that. On Premier, two tools are Coming soon to show how AI answers present your business: a visibility report and a visibility check.
